John 11:25

I am the resurrection and the life

Understanding John 11:25

In the eleventh chapter of the gospel of John, in which this verse is found, we read about the Lord Jesus raising a man by the name of Lazarus from the dead. The Lord Jesus here is talking to Martha, one of Lazarus’ two sisters. Lazarus died while the Lord Jesus was away. When he came, there was mourning and weeping at the death of Lazarus. The Lord Jesus, before raising Lazarus from the dead, left with us the truth about a greater resurrection. Many people believe that there is no life after death, but the Bible teaches that we were created with an eternal soul and spirit. All the dead shall be raised one day. Many to face eternal punishment in the lake of fire. However, the believers in the Lord Jesus Christ will rise from the dead to be with Christ forever in Glory. That is why the Lord Jesus himself is the resurrection unto eternal life. But what did the Lord Jesus mean by “believe in me”? This means to believe everything the Bible tells us about the Lord Jesus. He is the Son of God who came to earth in a body of humanity. He did great miracles, but He came to die for sinners. He was holy but crucified willingly to pay for our sins. He was buried and rose on the third day. After His resurrection, He showed Himself to many of those who believed in Him. He ascended to Heaven after He promised that He will come again to take those who believed in Him to be with Him forever. In this sense, He conquered death. For those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, death is only a gateway to Glory with Him. For those who reject Him, death is a gateway to eternal punishment away from Him.

Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: – John 11:25

Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ – John 3:7
