1 John 5:11-12

He that hath not the Son of God hath not life

Understanding 1 John 5:11-12

Any human record (or, report) could include errors because no one is perfect. In this verse, we find a report from God. God cannot lie, and He is the Truth. Every word in this record/report is true and worthy of acceptance. Many consider life to be the time period between birth and death, or between the first breath and the last breath. The Bible says, we were all created by the living God and it talks about the “life of God,” which is eternal, immortal, invisible, pure light, and glorious in every sense. Because of sin, all of us are, by nature, darkened in our understanding and separated from the life of God. This is caused by ignorance and hardened hearts (Ephesians 4:18).

Eternal life was not revealed to mankind till the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. John also wrote about his experience with the Lod Jesus Christ when He was on earth: “For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;” (1 John 1:2). This is the life that all should be seeking. Without this life, we will live with no hope and no purpose. We can have this life only in the Son of God. He that hath the Son hath life. “Hath the Son” means believing the record of God about His Son and the record of God about us. Simply put, to believe God’s record is to have faith in Him.

And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: (Ephesians 2:1-6)

He that hath not the Son of God hath not life. This doesn’t mean that he who does not believe in the Lord Jesus and His redemptive work on the cross will immediately die, but rather that he is considered by God to be spiritually dead. Unbelievers still have eternal souls, and they will spend eternity in hell separated from God. This would be an eternal existence, but far from the eternal life that is offered to all through the Lord Jesus Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection.

Why should anyone reject such a great gift?

And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. – 1 John 5:11-12

Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ – John 3:7
