“The Son of man” is one of the titles the Lord Jesus Christ used frequently to describe Himself while He was on earth. He is the Son of God who was born in a body of humanity from the virgin Mary. He did not have an earthly father. The title “Son of God” speaks of the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the title “Son of Man” speaks of His humanity. He was the perfect God and the perfect man at the same time. The Lord Jesus came from heaven for a specific divine mission. He came to save sinners. We are all sinners. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” (Romans 3:23). God is holy. “For the wages of sin is death;” (Romans 6:23). The justice of God demands the punishment of sin. God loved the world of sinners. The Lord Jesus came from heaven to pay for our sins by dying on the cross around 2000 years ago. A ransom is what is paid to set somebody free. The Lord Jesus gave His life as a ransom for us. The verse above says the Lord Jesus came to “minister… many”, which means that He served them greatly. He didn’t come to judge, although He is the heavenly Judge who will judge all on the day of judgement. Rather, He lived the life of a Servant to His Father and to those who were around Him. He died on the cross, was buried, and rose again on the third day. He ascended to Heaven, and He is in the Glory now. Not all will benefit from His greatest ministry; only those who trusted Him as their Saviour and Lord.
