Everyone knows the feeling of a nice warm shower. It is not only enjoyable in its temperature, but also in what it’s doing. The shower is cleansing you of the dirt, sweat, and stress of the day. It’s a wonderful thing to be clean. God tells us in his Word, the Bible, that we need to be washed clean. The Bible says that we are as an unclean thing (Isaiah 64:6) because of the sin that has separated us from God (Isaiah 59:2). Our wicked works has made us enemies of God (Colossians 1:21). We overlook sins like lying, but God says that all liars will have their part in the lake of fire (Revelation 21:8). We celebrate sins like pride, but God says that pride comes before destruction (Proverbs 16:18). We enjoy leering and lusting after other people, but God says that to lust is as wicked as cheating on your partner (Matthew 5:28). God calls us sinners (Romans 3:23). We are filthy creatures, in need of cleansing.
The Bible talks about the cleansing blood of the Lord Jesus Christ (1 John 1:7). His blood can cleanse from sin because there’s no sin in his blood. “And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin” (1 John 3:5). Our sins put us at enmity with God in this life, and unfit for heaven in the next (Romans 6:23). “But God commendeth (demonstrated) his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him” (Romans 5:8-9). What the Lord Jesus Christ did by dying on a cruel cross 2000 years ago can save you from your sins today, wherever you are. God’s way of salvation is for absolutely anyone who comes to him in repentance and faith. “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13). The Lord Jesus said, “…him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out” (John 6:37).
The verse above explains that there is nothing that we can offer God that can give us the cleansing we need. No works of righteousness that we can do can be received as payment for our sin; we need a sinless sacrificial substitute. The Lord Jesus Christ is all of those things, and God’s mercy made a way for sinners to be saved through him. “But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)” (Ephesians 2:4-5). This is the washing that the verse above is speaking of. What can wash away my sin? Nothing, but the blood of Jesus. Come to the Lord Jesus, and trust him to save you from all your sins, and he will cleanse you. He also promises you his Spirit (or, the Holy Ghost), who will be with you from the moment of salvation onward (Ephesians 1:13). He will never leave you, nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5). Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved today (Acts 16:31).
